How do you create an Arma Reforger server?

Creating an Arma Reforger server can be done two ways: self-hosting with the dedicated server provided by the game (free but technical) or through an Arma Reforger host (paid, but ready in seconds). Good news: Arma Reforger has an official cross-platform dedicated server. Here are both methods, step by step.

Method 1: self-host the dedicated server

1. Get the dedicated server

The Arma Reforger dedicated server is installed through Bohemia's official tools (available on PC/Windows and Linux). It runs without a graphical interface, from the command line.

2. Write the configuration file

All the configuration goes through a JSON file: server name, scenario (Conflict, Game Master…), slot count, passwords, and above all the mod list by their Workshop IDs. A JSON syntax error stops the server from starting, so be meticulous.

3. Open the ports

For your players to connect from the outside, you have to open the necessary ports (UDP) on your router and share your public IP. That's where most beginners get stuck: dynamic IP, firewall, CGNAT from certain ISPs…

4. Launch and monitor

Launch the executable with your config file, then monitor the console: you're the one managing startups, crashes and updates with every patch.

The limits of self-hosting

  • Your machine has to stay on permanently and needs a powerful CPU (Arma Reforger is demanding).
  • No Anti-DDoS protection: exposing your personal IP is risky.
  • JSON configuration, ports, updates, backups: it's all on you.

Method 2: go through a host (the simplest)

A host removes the entire technical side: no ports to open, no IP to expose, a server online 24/7. At Fly-Serv, setup is instant: you pick your plan, the server is delivered in seconds, and the FlyPanel lets you choose the scenario, install mods and edit the config without touching the JSON by hand. Simple rule: for a weekend test among insiders, self-hosting is enough. For a permanent, smooth and protected server, a host is cheaper on time… and often on money.

Conclusion

If you're starting out or aiming for a stable community, create your Arma Reforger server with Fly-Serv from €4.99/month, on a Ryzen 9 7950X3D with Anti-DDoS and FlyPanel included. Prefer to compare first? Read where to rent an Arma Reforger server.
