How to create your own DayZ server? The complete guide

Creating your own DayZ server can be done in two ways: self-hosting on your own machine via the official dedicated server (free but technical and resource-hungry) or via a host (paid, but ready in a few seconds). Since DayZ is a survival game that is very demanding on RAM and CPU, the choice is far from trivial. Here are both methods, step by step.

Method 1: self-host the DayZ dedicated server

1. Install the dedicated server

The DayZ Dedicated Server is installed from the Steam tools (in your library, under the "Tools" section). It downloads the server executable and the file tree, including the mpmissions folders and the configuration files.

2. Edit serverDZ.cfg

Configuration goes through the serverDZ.cfg file: server name, number of slots, password, day/night cycle, damage… We break down every line in our guide How to configure a DayZ server.

3. Tune the mission files

Loot, vehicles and animals are set in the mission's XML files, in particular types.xml. That is where the balance of your server is decided (weapon rarity, food quantity…).

4. Open the ports (the most tedious part)

For your players to connect from the outside, you need to open the server's ports (game and query) on your router and share your public IP. Dynamic IP, firewall, CGNAT from some ISPs: this is where most beginners get stuck.

The limits of self-hosting

  • Your PC must stay on at all times and DayZ is very demanding on RAM and CPU: it is hard to play and host on the same machine.
  • No DDoS protection: exposing your personal IP is risky on such a heavily targeted game.
  • Backups, game and mod updates, security: everything is on you.
Simple rule: for a weekend test with friends, self-hosting is enough. For a permanent, smooth server, a host saves you more time… and often more money.

Method 2: go through a host (the easiest)

A host removes all the technical side: no ports to open, no IP to expose, server online 24/7. With Fly-Serv, creating a DayZ server is instant: the server is delivered in a few seconds with a ready-to-share address, on Ryzen 9 7950X3D machines built for survival, and the FlyPanel panel lets you start it, install mods and edit serverDZ.cfg in one click.

Conclusion

If you are just starting out or aiming for a stable community, create your DayZ server with Fly-Serv from €8.99/month, DDoS protection included and no commitment. Wondering what it really costs? See What is the price of a DayZ server?
