Joining an RP (roleplay) server on Garry's Mod is easy once you know the right methods. RP, dominated by the DarkRP gamemode, is played on community servers that you first need to find, then join. Here's how to do it.
Method 1: the built-in server browser
From GMod's main menu, open "Find Multiplayer Game". In the Internet tab, filter by the DarkRP gamemode to see only RP servers. Sort by player count to spot active communities, then double-click to join.
Method 2: join by IP (console)
If a friend gives you their server address, open the console (² or ~ key) and type connect ip:port, for example connect 51.83.0.0:27015. It's the most reliable way to join a specific server.
Method 3: favorites
In the server browser, add your favorite servers in the Favorites tab (right-click → Add to favorites, or by IP). You'll find them again instantly every session.
Getting your first RP connection right
- On first access, the server downloads its addons (weapons, jobs, map). Let the download finish.
- Enable fast download if the server offers it: it's much quicker.
- Read the server rules (often shown at spawn): RP has its own codes, and RDM and NLR are punished.
A good RP server is recognizable by its stability: little lag, addons that load fast, and an active community. That depends directly on the quality of the hosting.
What if you built your own?
Joining a smooth RP server often makes you want to open your own. On a Fly-Serv Garry's Mod server, powered by a Ryzen 9 7950X3D processor with Anti-DDoS included, you can launch your own DarkRP server from €2.99/month. To do so, follow our guide How to create a Garry's Mod DarkRP server, and discover all the plans on the Garry's Mod hosting page.
