Unlike Minecraft, ARK: Survival Evolved does not have an ecosystem of 100% free hosts comparable to Aternos. There are nonetheless ways to play without paying a subscription, but each has limits you should know before turning to dedicated ARK hosting.
1. The "non-dedicated" session (in-game)
ARK includes a non-dedicated session option: one player hosts the game from within their copy of the game and invites their friends. It is free, but very limited:
- An invisible "tether" holds players within a certain distance of the host: you cannot stray too far from one another.
- The game stops as soon as the host disconnects: no persistent 24/7 world.
- The number of players is very small and performance depends on the host's machine.
