Does Sons of the Forest really have dedicated servers?

The question comes up with every new squad of survivors: can you keep Sons of the Forest running without someone acting as host all the time? The answer is yes. Endnight ships an official Dedicated Server, separate from the game client, able to host 8 players in co-op and keep your island alive around the clock.
What the Endnight dedicated tool actually allows
Unlike a "Multiplayer" game launched from the menu, the dedicated server is a standalone executable. It loads neither the graphics rendering nor your personal Steam session: it only simulates the world. As a result, your progress, the buildings you've raised and the state of the caves all persist even when your PC is switched off.
- Persistent island: Kelvin, Virginia and your bunkers stay right where you left them.
- No host required: nobody needs to stay connected for the others to play.
- Offloaded load: mutant physics and AI run somewhere other than a player's machine.
Host mode: where it shows its limits
The built-in host mode stays handy for a spur-of-the-moment evening. But as soon as the campaign stretches over weeks (autumn closing in, a fortified base, exploring the deep caves), it becomes a constraint: you can't move forward unless the host is around, and latency climbs when they play and host on the same PC.
Endnight designed two tools for two uses: the multiplayer menu to bail out a session, the dedicated server for a survival campaign built to last.
Who is the dedicated server worth it for?
If you play as a pair on weekends, host mode does the job. If you're building a regular group that wants to find its island back anytime, the dedicated server quickly becomes the center of gravity for your games. Setting it up yourself via SteamCMD is doable, but running a hosted Sons of the Forest server spares you the whole ports-and-maintenance side.
In short
Yes, Sons of the Forest has a real official dedicated server for up to 8 players. What's left is deciding how to launch it: our guide How to create a Sons of the Forest server details both routes, and you can get started right away with Fly-Serv from €7.99/month.
