How to join a Rust server?

Joining a Rust server takes a few seconds once you know the three methods: the in-game list, the favorites, or the direct connection by IP in the console. Here's how to do it, including joining your own server.
Method 1: the server list (in-game)
In Rust's main menu, click Play Game. Use the filters (Official, Community, Modded) and the search bar to find a server by its name. Click, then Connect. It's the simplest method for discovering new servers.
Method 2: the favorites
Add your favorite servers to favorites (star icon): they'll appear in the Favorites tab, with the live player count. Ideal for instantly finding your server after a wipe.
Method 3: direct connection by IP (the most reliable)
If you have the IP and port of the server, it's the safest method:
- Open the console with the F1 key.
- Type
client.connect IP:PORT(for exampleclient.connect 51.83.xxx.xxx:28015). - Confirm: the game connects directly, even if the server doesn't appear in the list.
Direct connection is perfect right after a wipe or when the server is recent and not yet indexed in the community list.
Can't connect?
- Check that the server is indeed online and that the IP/port are exact.
- A version issue after a Facepunch update sometimes prevents the connection: update the client.
- On a self-hosted server, a poorly opened port blocks everything, a problem that hosts avoid (see How to create a Rust server?).
