How to configure a dedicated The Front server?

On a dedicated The Front server, almost everything is decided in a single file: GameServerSettings.ini, generated on the first start after the SteamCMD install. Some settings can be fixed at any time, others mark your community for life. We separate the two, with our recommendations.

The GameServerSettings.ini lines that matter

  • Server name: what shows in the browser, clear and recognizable.
  • Password: filled in for a private server, left empty for a public one.
  • Game mode: cooperative PvE (build and explore without aggression) or PvP (combat and base raids allowed).
  • Harvest and craft rates: the multipliers that speed up or stretch progression.
  • Number of slots: to match to RAM and CPU, not to desire.
  • Respawn and damage: the casual ↔ hardcore slider.

The one setting you can't take back: PvE or PvP

Multipliers and slots can be tweaked without drama. The game mode, no: a settled PvE community that discovers PvP overnight empties out. Decide before the public opening and announce it clearly. It's the most structuring choice in the file.

Matching slots to real RAM

  • One slot too many for the available RAM, and it's frame drops for everyone.
  • Relaunch SteamCMD after each patch to stay on the same version as your players.
  • Aim for a high single-thread frequency CPU (see Which host to choose for The Front).
The rule that avoids 90% of "it doesn't work": any change to the .ini is only taken into account after a full server restart.

Doing it without opening a text editor

On a The Front server hosted at Fly-Serv, FlyPanel edits GameServerSettings.ini through an interface and restarts in one click, ideal for adjusting rates or switching PvE/PvP live, with no FTP or command line.
